Overview[edit | edit source]

Pop-up ads are a form of online advertising where an ad appears in a new browser window or tab. These windows are usually generated by JavaScript, but can also be generated by other means as well. A variation on the pop-up window, the pop-under advertisement, opens a new browser window beneath the active window. Pop-ups can be seen on almost any kind of website and are employed for many reasons, such as capturing email addresses, advertising products, or conducting user surveys.

Usage Types[edit | edit source]

Direct Advertising[edit | edit source]

Pop-up ads can be used for direct advertising. They can display an offer, a discount code, or a product ad that the advertiser believes the viewer might be interested in. These types of pop-up ads are usually designed to be as catchy and eye-grabbing as possible.

Email Marketing[edit | edit source]

Pop-up ads can also be used for email marketing purposes. For instance, a website might display a pop-up ad asking the visitor to sign up for a newsletter or email updates. This helps the website collect email addresses, which can then be used for email marketing campaigns.

User Surveys[edit | edit source]

Some websites use pop-up ads to conduct user surveys. These surveys can provide valuable user feedback and data. By asking users to fill out a short survey in a pop-up ad, websites can gather data about user preferences, habits, and other valuable information.

Criticism and Controversy[edit | edit source]

Pop-up ads have been heavily criticized for being intrusive and annoying. They can interrupt a user's browsing experience and can be particularly problematic on mobile devices, where they can take up the entire screen. Furthermore, some pop-up ads have been associated with malicious activities such as phishing scams and malware distribution.

However, due to their effectiveness at grabbing user attention, pop-up ads continue to be used by many websites and advertisers.
