Topic Overview[edit | edit source]

A SERP typically contains two types of content: organic results and paid results. Organic results are listings of web pages that closely match the user's search query and are not sponsored. On the other hand, paid results, also known as pay-per-click (PPC) ads, are advertisements for which advertisers pay to appear on the results page.

Each SERP is unique, even for search queries conducted on the same search engine using the same keywords or search queries. This is because virtually all search engines customize the experience for their users by presenting results based on a wide range of factors beyond their search terms, including the user's physical location, browsing history, and social settings.

Usage Types[edit | edit source]

Organic Results[edit | edit source]

Organic results in SERPs are determined by the search engine's algorithm. They are based on relevance to the search term and other factors like page quality and content freshness. Good SEO practices can help websites rank higher in organic search results, thus increasing their visibility.

[edit | edit source]

Paid results are those that have been paid to be displayed by an advertiser. They are often prominent on the page, either at the top of the results or to the side of the results, and are usually distinguished from organic results by a label indicating that they are ads.

Local Results[edit | edit source]

For certain types of searches, search engines display local results, also known as local pack or map pack. These are a group of results that appear in a separate block within the SERP, listing local businesses related to the search query.

Knowledge Graph[edit | edit source]

The knowledge graph is a knowledge base used by Google and its services to enhance its search engine's results. It produces summarized information about the query in a box, which is often displayed at the top or right side of the organic search results.

Rich Snippets and Featured Snippets[edit | edit source]

Rich snippets are search listings that provide more information than typical snippets, such as reviewer ratings, product availability, etc. Featured snippets are selected search results that are featured on top of Google's organic results, aiming to answer the user's question right away.
